Dr Gene Sharp is a short, soft-spoken old bloke from Boston. If you passed him in the street you might think he tends orchids but you probably wouldn't guess he has been a key player in popular uprisings in Serbia, the Ukraine, Thailand, Burma, Iran, Egypt and elsewhere thanks to his writings, including a slim 1993 volume entitled From Dictatorship to Democracy. "That spread [of ideas] was really quite remarkable," Sharp says in this documentary. "I'm still amazed." To undermine dictatorships, Sharp has devised 198 specific methods for non-violent resistance. These include adopting a single colour, creating an easily identifiable symbol and, of course, protesting in public spaces. Other methods are more lateral, including the destruction of one's own property, humorous skits and pranks, singing, collective disappearance and reluctant and slow compliance. Eloquent resistance leaders in Serbia and the Ukraine reveal their debt to Sharp. Not everyone will agree with the documentary's reverential tone - some argue that Sharp has received far too much credit. But however his contribution is quantified, he does deserve commendation. He's one of the good guys. Resources: ---------- The documentary is available thanks to sbsNapper: http://users.on.net/~m.elliott/s/index.html Props to the developer! Uploaded to the Usenet Newsgroup: https://www.binsearch.info/browse.php?bg=alt.binaries.documentaries Technical Details: ------------------ The source file is encoded as Flash video (*.flv), I have not converted it to any other format. The cross-platform (Windows, MacOSX, GNU/Linux) VideoLAN VLC Media Player will play the file on your computer: http://www.videolan.org/ If you want to convert it to a more versatile, hardware media player compatible format I suggest using: http://ffmpeg.org/ ffmpeg -i foo.flv foo.avi *might* naively do the trick. This is a good guide: http://worldtv.com/blog/guides_tutorials/flv_converter.php Rather than upload my naive conversion attempt, you have the source file to work with instead. If you know how do a great, highly compatible, lossless transcoding / conversion, then upload that to the Usenet Newsgroup Binaries, thank you. http://mediainfo.sourceforge.net/en General Complete name : SBS-How_To_Start_A_Revolution-2011-Documentary-sbsNapper.flv Format : Flash Video File size : 556 MiB Duration : 52mn 3s Overall bit rate : 1 492 Kbps Video Format : AVC Format/Info : Advanced Video Codec Format profile : Main@L3.1 Format settings, CABAC : No Format settings, ReFrames : 2 frames Muxing mode : Container profile=Unknown@3.1 Duration : 52mn 3s Width : 640 pixels Height : 360 pixels Display aspect ratio : 16/9 Frame rate mode : Variable Frame rate : 25.000 fps Standard : PAL Resolution : 24 bits Colorimetry : 4:2:0 Scan type : Progressive Audio Format : AAC Format/Info : Advanced Audio Codec Format version : Version 4 Format profile : LC Format settings, SBR : Yes Format settings, PS : No Duration : 52mn 3s Channel(s) : 2 channels Channel positions : L R Sampling rate : 44.1 KHz Resolution : 16 bits http://en.wikiquote.org/wiki/Isaac_Newton "If I have seen further it is only by standing on the shoulders of giants." -- Isaac Newton, to Robert Hooke, 5 February 1676 So similarly, paraphrased: If I have ripped farther, it is only by standing on the shoulders of internet giants.
