Arts & Crafts Movement
In the beginning of course, everything was handmade. But despite the promise of the machine age, in 19th century England and America the industrial revolution also lead to a deeply rooted intellectual mistrust in certain quarters the effect of the machine on society.
People’s homes were being furnished, not by carefully handcrafted one-off items, but by mass-produced reproductions. And out of a feeling that the demise of good craftsmanship also reflected a demise in the something important in society, the Arts & Crafts Movement was born.
