Officers and Inmates

Roger was a farmer, Karen was a dress designer. Now they are both prison officers, working in the Mid North Coast Correctional Centre. This prison opened last year, 65% of its staff are locals. It was the first centre in NSW to trial a new approach to corrections, 'The Way Forward'. While the rhetoric promises new attitudes and more respect from officers, the centre itself gleams with intimidation.
Producer Liz Keen visits the gaol and meets officers and inmates to find out whether 'The Way Forward' really is a more humane way of incarcerating people, or whether it is just a shallow shift to more politically correct language. She also explores the major career change these two officers have gone through.
