An exploration of the elements: Quintessence is an experiment in sound and movement. The concept for the event has grown out of a desire to bring together a live spontaneous creativity in music and dance with the intense energy of the dance party experience. It is a collaborative effort between representatives from several student unions, including Swinburne, RMIT, Footscray Performing Arts, VCA and Melbourne Uni along with artists, and performers from all over Melbourne, including the ever morphing musician-technicians from Clan Analogue. Creating our own rituals and hybrid forms of celebration-expression is an important strategy for building community in these dangerously self interested times.

Music throughout the night will be an electronic and acoustic feedback loop set up between the musicians, visual artists and dancers, exploring the elemental themes one by one.

The elemental journey will begin at midnight as we move into the element of air, ambient sound, projections, animations and suspended performance will reflect this ethereal element. At around 1am we move from air to fire, and start to burn with harder beats, performance pyromania... on it goes through the soothing aquatic realms until reaching the solid ground of earth. Organic percussive beats and dance therapy prepare the elemental adventurers for launching at dawn into the spirit Zone.. This will be introduced by Peter Gleeson and the Spontaneous Choir, leading us up into the new day. It is an event designed for participation, with no audience-performer separation. A dance experience for those who know the release that dance can offer but would like to experiment with something other than the standard chemically driven doof.
